The Sailor's Refrain

The Sailor's Refrain is maritime folk built from sea songs, sailors' ballads, working choruses and saltwater folklore. Deep male vocals, rough crew harmonies, acoustic guitar, concertina, fiddle, bouzouki, frame drum and boot-stomp rhythms create the feeling of music made by people who have actually spent too long at sea. The songs range from traditional-style shanties to narrative ballads about wrecks, distant harbours, naval history, superstition, loss and the peculiar rules sailors invent when land is far away. Some stories are rowdy, some tragic and some quietly reflective, but the sea is never simply scenery. It is usually another character. The Sailor's Refrain treats maritime tradition as living storytelling: old forms carrying new tales of departure, danger, memory and return.
